SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Next month, tenants living in The Baltic and St. Charles apartments on East Odneal Street in Sherman will have to find a new place to live. They found eviction notices taped to their doors on Wednesday.

"I thought, what does this paper say? You take it, and you read the letter, and I'm looking at my walls, my floor, and I see this place where I live, and all of a sudden someone is going to tell me that I have to move," said Terri Sexton, who has been living in the apartments for 12 years.

The eviction notice states that the closure is due to the apartment complexes not meeting the city of Sherman's standards under the Code of Ordinances.

According to Sherman's Public Information Officer, Nate Strauch, the city has been trying to work with ownership to get these complexes up to code for months.

"They currently don't have a Certificate of Occupancy, which is the license that allows you to operate a business in the city of Sherman," stated Strauch. "It was just really poorly maintained over time, and those were the things we were asking them to correct, but at the end of the day they just weren't willing to do that."

A post on the City of Sherman's Facebook states the apartment owners made the final decision to shutdown and evict their tenants. The decision was made with the city’s knowledge, but not required nor enforced by the city.

While some tenants find themselves scrambling, others say they saw the writing on the wall.

"I told them before I left: Look, you need to see if you can find something else," said Carolyn Guess who moved out of the apartments 2 months ago. "You need to get out, because something tells me this is not going to be long."

Renters will have to be moved out before July 12th.
