SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Sherman police are working to investigate a Monday afternoon shooting incident in the 1300 block of East Ida Road.

Officers responded after a homeowner called 911 to report shots fired.

"Upon arrival, officers located the homeowner and detectives were called. Another individual was detained," said Lt. Sam Boyle.

The suspect was apprehended less than a block away from the shooting scene after the homeowner — who was not identified — told investigators that the suspect tried to break into his shed, leaving him to defend his property with a gun.

"When the homeowner confronted him, the suspect allegedly charged him with a screwdriver," Boyle said. "The homeowner is claiming self-defense with the discharge of the firearm."

The suspect — identified as Sherman resident Jose Antonio Menjivar — was taken to a local hospital for minor and non-life threatening injuries to his hand from the shooting.

"The detectives are going to continue to their investigation to determine whether or not the discharge of the firearm was justified according to state law," Boyle said.

Menjivar was charged with burglary.
