SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) - Troop 15 Eagle Scouts took flight with a project that's as patriotic as it is practical. A brand-new American flag drop off is now at the Sherman Fire Station 4 to make sure our Stars and Stripes get the respect they deserve.

Gabe Rodgers, an Eagle Scout candidate from Boy Scouts of America in Troop 15, dedicated his capstone project to bring life to a place to retire Old Glory's.

"It's really important that we have this here. You see a lot of people have battered up and old flags; It makes you feel good that they have the opportunity to have that flag respectfully retired," said Troop 15 Eagle Scouts member, Adam Johnson, who assisted with the project. "In Scouts, now-a-days, I think people just tend to do the same thing over and over and over. I think it's a great idea that he chose to do something very different from all the rest of them."

For the past six years, Rodgers has been involved in installing flags through the Sherman Rotary Club's Flag program.

Over time, he noticed a common question: Residents repeatedly would ask if he knew where they could dispose of their worn out flags. He then discovered that Sherman only had one other drop off box at VFW Post 2772.

"They need to be respectfully disposed of by a ceremony, otherwise, people will just leave them in their garage, or throw them away in the trash – and to me, that's disrespectful," stated Rodgers.

During the past five months, Rodgers has been planning and raising funds to support his vision of bringing a second flag drop off box to the city.

With the helping hands of troop members, the vision is now a reality.

The collection box near Fire Station 4-Progressive Park, which is situated at 3117 Northgate Drive in Sherman, is where locals can now drop off their flags. They will be kept safe until the Sherman Fire Department conducts the retirement ceremonies.
