ARDMORE, Okla. (KTEN) — Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant lost his reelection bid on Friday evening after his name was not the one that was on a handwritten piece of paper that was drawn from a metal bucket.

Carter County Election Board staffers met Friday to recount the votes for the Republican primary sheriff's race. In the June 18 election, Bryant received 2,569 votes — but so did challenger DJ Long.

Five provisional ballots had previously been rejected, so a clear winner hinged on the results of Friday's recount, but that number remained unchanged after all the ballots were reviewed by hand.

Under state law, the election board chose the winner by lot, and the name that emerged from the bucket was DJ Long.
